  • The African continent comprises of 54 nations. The newest addition to that list is South Sudan, which was born on 9th July, 2011.
  • The tallest mountain in Africa is called Mount Kilimanjaro. It is based in Tanzania and is 19,340 feet high.
  • Lake Assal is lowest point in Africa and lies 515 feet below sea level.
  • The Sahara Desert is the biggest desert in Africa. The Sahara Desert covers the area of almost 3.5 million square miles. More than dozen countries are part of this desert and makes up most part of North Africa.
  • Longest river in the world is The Nile River. It covers the length of 6,650 km from Uganda to Egypt.
  • Lake Victoria which is present East Africa is considered to be largest lake in the world. Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania are the countries whose borders collide with this lake. It is the 2nd largest lake in the world at the moment. It is also the main source of Nile River.
  • Madagascar is the largest island in Africa. It is located Off the East coast of Arica in the Indian Ocean. It is also the 4th largest island in the world and ranges over 1000 miles in length and about 350 miles in width.
  • On the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe is located Africa’s largest waterfall called The Victoria Falls. It is over one mile wide and 355 feet tall. During the raining season more than 500 litres of water falls through this waterfall into the Zambezi River.
  • The equator in Africa is about 2500 miles and runs through six countries including Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Kenya, Congo, Uganda and Somalia.
  • Nigeria is the most populated country of Africa. The population is estimated to be around 150 million people. Egypt is the 2nd most populated with more than 80 million people.
  • The lowest populated country of Africa is The Seychelles with its population around 80,000 people. Namibia is 2nd in this category.
  • In terms of most populated cities, Cairo is the most populated with more than 17 million people living in this city of Egypt.
  • Maseru which is the capital of Lesotho has only 14,000 residents and considered the least populated city of Africa.
  • There are more than 3000 distinct ethnic groups residing the continent of Africa. Only Nigeria has more than 370 tribes.
  • With so many tribes and ethnic groups there are also many languages spoken between them. It is estimated that there are more than 2000 languages being spoken at the moment. However, Arabic is the most spoken language with over 170 million speakers.

Africa is a very beautiful continent. Each year millions of visitors come here and enjoy its vast cultures. The wild life of Africa and its national parks are the most popular things that attract people coming into Africa.
